The simplest days of the week activities are the most effective at teaching our children. In our home preschool, I started our 3-day a week preschool learning time with a calendar time.

In a preschool classroom these activities are done during “circle time,” but at home we were moving and did these in the corner of our dining room.

After singing our calendar time song, we learned the days of the week. Teaching the days of the week activities in a DIY way keeps costs down whether you teach preschool at home or in a school.

Our little days of the week board was simply made with construction paper and markers. I laminated it with my trusty Costco laminator – that is 10 years old and still working great. Here is how we put this little chart together and used it for learning the days of the week.

Learning the days of the week

On a ½ sheet of construction paper, I wrote the days of the week in one column. I drew lines between each day and added one to make a column for our “tracking markers.” The tracking markers help a child learn today, tomorrow, and yesterday.

Supplies:

piece of construction paper

index card

black marker

On an index card or small piece of white paper, write yesterday, today, tomorrow.

Cut these apart into rectangles so each word can be placed on the chart.

Then, laminate these as well to keep them looking new all school year long. Optional, of course.

There is a cute little days of the week song sung to the tune of BINGO too. So, we would start our preschool day with our days of the week activities: First was moving our tracking markers on this days of the week chart.

Next, we would use our calendar song that I wrote on a big piece of chart paper to sing about the days.

This repetition is really good for preschool brain development. Dig into my post about preschool child development for some good into on that topic.

Then, we worked through our home preschool daily routine.

It is so simple to teach the days of the week and keeping it simple is the best for young children. They need to hear and see things many times before the information sticks in their brains.

So, let’s be patient parents and give them what they need. I loved our time at home for preschool. If you are still wondering if home preschool is for you and your family, read this article and grab my book on school choices. It is a candid look into preschool and child development.

Days of the week activities are in our preschool learning curriculum too! Lots of ideas for your preschool time. We incorporate days of the week activities in our morning circle and song time. It is a relaxed way to be teaching helpful life skills all in ways that preschoolers love.
