Easy ABC poster and alphabet learning game activity for preschool and toddlers.

This ABC poster and alphabet learning game is an easy one to create with your children so that they can see you writing each letter and work on pre-reading skills.

You do not have to be an artist to do this. How often for your kids ask you to draw a picture for them, or add a special drawing to their artwork? My preschoolers have always enjoyed when I would draw something on their paper-even my toddlers recently were asking me to draw owls on their papers. I have no idea where the owl thought popped into their heads, but I tried my best. It was not even close to looking like an owl. Don’t worry about your artistic skills. This is more about spending quality time with your child.

Making the most of your time at home with your children just makes sense. My kids get a bunch of time to play on their own while I am doing dishes or folding clothes, so I try to plan in at least one or two learning activities per day that are geared towards having fun and preparing them for school.

My toddlers and preschooler learn together since they are all home with me while my oldest is at school. I love that both toddlers and preschoolers can work on many of the same activities and learn at their own pace together. That makes things a little easier for us parents!

To start you need 2 supplies. That is it!

ABC Poster Supplies

Large piece of paper or poster board. (If you do not have either, just use one piece of construction paper per letter.)

Crayons

Make the ABC Poster

Going letter by letter, singing the ABC song with your children, write each letter on the piece of paper or poster board.

Leave space next to and under each letter.

Sing slowly so your child sees you write the letter while hearing you say it.

When you are done writing each letter, go back to A and draw a picture of something that begins with the letter. Do this for each letter.

Don’t worry about your art skills. There were many drawings I made that are not very good, but we had fun thinking about each letter, saying the sound and my kids love seeing me draw…even if not very well!

We did not get the entire poster completed in one sitting-just to be honest. It took us a couple of days, and I think that is ok. Take your time-go at your child’s pace. You can even get out an alphabet book like the ones below to scan them for picture ideas.

When we did complete all of our drawings, we sang the ABC song again.

I pointed to each letter as we sang to give the kids that visual connection and deepen their pre-reading skills.

I hung the poster on the wall with masking tape so the kids would have it at their eye level to interact with during the days.

After the poster had been displayed for a week or so, I cut the poster apart. That one simple act turned our ABC poster into an alphabet learning game.

Alphabet Learning Game

I placed all of the pieces of the alphabet poster into a zip top bag and stored it with our other learning games that we use for homeschool preschool and tot school activities.

When my preschooler needs an activity-and as part of her homeschool lessons for learning letters-I can pull out this alphabet learning game for her to arrange in order. That is the learning activity-she can put the ABC poster together like a puzzle.

It cost us nothing to make. We spent quality time together learning. I felt like a successful mom for engaging my kids in the experience, and we have this learning game available for as long as it lasts. I can’t wait to use it more with the twins this coming fall when they start more engaged preschool activities!
