In our preschool at home curriculum, we study a letter of the day. It’s a great way to introduce the alphabet and focus just on one letter, its shape and its sound. I love this focused approach to teaching letters in preschool.

The letter of the day letter decorating idea needs a few supplies from the craft store. We also do a couple things to keep our work area clean while we get creative. Let’s dive in to what we did.

Letter Decorating for Letter of the Day Activities

Supplies:

Wood cutout letter

Small stick-on jewels

Glitter glue

Paint (optional)

Baking sheet (one from the Dollar Store or an old one you are willing to get dirty)

I started by setting a baking sheet on the table. We talked about letter ‘a’ and my daughter traced the letter cutout with her finger. We made the sounds that ‘A’ makes. Then, she got to decorate.

She used the small jewels to stick them on the letter. This is a great fine motor skill exercise.

After, she used some glitter glue to trace the ‘A’ shape and add some more color. She did not want to paint her letter, but if your child does, do that first. Let it dry completely and then decorate it further.

My oldest used watercolor to decorate his ‘E’. We still have his painted letter hanging in our laundry room since it is the first letter of our last name. I hot glued a ribbon to the back of the letter and hung it in his room until he decided he did not want it anymore. Now it is part of my laundry room décor.

Sometimes the simplest little projects stick around for a while. It’s a reminder of all that we learn together in our time doing preschool at home activities.

You can repeat with all the letters of the alphabet and will have a supply of fun letters to use in play and future learning. A bit big for letter tiles, but with the same effect. Our DIY letter tiles are great for letter learning too!
