Snowflake Foil Craft for Kids

What a fun indoor activity for winter time! Kids can paint foil snowflakes. This simple snowflake foil craft combines cutting, painting and fine motor skills for preschool.

{Guest post by Tracy Murdock}

We have been all cooped up inside due to the cold weather and all 3 of my kids having colds. What a better way to get their imaginations stirring and help them feel a little better, than with a fun art project that can be fun for all ages (even for moms)! Plus, this Simple Snowflake Foil Craft for Kids helps break up the day.

Materials:

White Paint
Paint Brush
Foil
Construction paper (we used blue construction paper)
Scissors

Optional:
Glitter Glue

Instructions for Simple Snowflake Foil Craft for Kids:

First, I gave each of my kids a piece of foil.

Next, we used a piece of construction paper to measure the foil and cut it equal to that size. We cut off the extra foil.

Then, we folded the foil over into a half triangle. We cut off the extra strip of foil here too, so that it was a nice equal triangle. This got us talking a lot about shapes.

We folded the foil about 3 more times into a smaller triangle.

Next, we talked about what shapes to cut into the snowflake.

We cut simple circles and triangles. I helped a lot with this part, but if you feel your kids can do it, try to have them cut the shapes with safety scissors.

We unfolded the foil into a snowflake. They used fine motor skills and practiced patience carefully pulling it apart. (It rips easily so be gentle).

My kids were so excited about how it turned out! The shiny foil made it even more exciting!

Next, we put down a piece of blue construction paper under the snowflake to get ready to paint.

Quick Tip: You can put down 2 pieces if you are nervous about it getting everywhere and even tape the snowflake down in a couple little spots to keep it in place. Using a cookie sheet as a painting tray can work well too.

We painted the foil with our white paint.

This part is optional, but we added glitter glue. We had a couple different colors of glitter glue. (I just love how glitter glue doesn’t spread all over the house.)

H loved to go all out with rainbow colors. M loved just focusing on 1 color, a pretty blue.

Quick Tip: If you do use regular glitter, baby wipes and dryer sheets helped me pick it up a little easier.

My girls, H and M had a great time swirling and swooshing all around with their paint and glitter. It seemed soothing for them.

Finally, they carefully picked up their snowflakes and showed them to each other.

It was a fun surprise to see the painting underneath the snowflake on the blue paper as well! We called it a snowstorm.

I let them add a little more paint to their snowstorm on the blue paper, so I had a chance to hang their snowflakes to dry.

I added a piece of yarn at the tip of each of their snowflakes so I could hang them up to dry overnight.

When we saw them the next morning, we loved how they shimmer and shine when the sun hits them! H and M thought they made it look like a snowflake party!

Ideas to Add More Fun Learning:

Science: We talked about the cold weather and what causes a snowflake to form

Math/Shapes: We researched images of all of the different types of snowflakes.

Reading Comprehension: We thought of a story about a snowflake…”If you were a snowflake, where would you fall?”

Ages: Fun for all ages. My twin girls are 4 and my toddler is almost 2.
