We love using unexpected teaching tools for hands-on learning. One of my favorite ideas is using cupcake toppers for math learning. I shared a flower-themed math activity for spring, and this math game is perfect for a Flag Day or 4th of July thematic unit.

Start by deciding which math facts your child will be working on. This idea replaces boring flash cards with a math activity that works perfectly in a classroom for center time or at home for a table activity.

Turn the egg carton upside down and write the number 0-12 on each one.

Then, write math facts on each flag. You can write one on the front and one on the back to maximize the activity. Maybe addition facts on the front and subtraction on the back, or do multiplication and division. We have a lot of math game ideas here on the blog.

Then, pre-poke holes using one of the cupcake toper flags. This will help your child push a flag into each egg cup easily. Just poke the toothpick part into the egg cups.

Next, show your child how to calculate the answer mentally or with manipulatives like with our addition practice activity mat.

Your child may need your help to learn how to match each math fact flag to the corresponding egg cup answer.

If your child is using pom poms or Lego bricks as a manipulative, you can even teach them to self-check the answers.

Always check their work too. This is a fun way for kids to use their hands and their heads for learning math facts and equations.
